CA Caves: Cool Vacation Getaway

California cave vacations are really cool. REALLY cool.

Cave tours in places such as O’Brien on Shasta Lake near Redding, offer heat sensitive travelers a superb air conditioned experience when the temps outside hover around 100 degrees on a dry, hot Shasta Cascade summer day. From Redding to Sequoia’s Crystal Cave, tourists on weekend getaways, travelers on vacation and locals who love their favorite haunts all can enjoy the hidden treasures, the lesser known vacation gems worthy of exploration in California.

California is not widely known or recognized for its cave experiences, but like the great caves of Missouri and practically every other state in which we’ve found and explored the caverns of mystery and interest, California offers its fair share of cave exploring and tours. And some of the mysteries of these caves include a few ghostly spirits in mining camps and ghost town cities where gold was mined, and some miners died during their quest for riches.

Perhaps the biggest, wealthiest mine  which is now a state park is Empire Mine Historical Park near  Grass Valley. Many activities and a very dedicated volunteer group of enthusiasts keep history alive by running this facility for visitors to see and enjoy. Not only do thousands of school children visit and learn about California’s gold, tourists around from the world love the stories and the lore of California gold country. Many possibly had ancestors who came to the US to seek their wealth, while family members stayed behind in the home country.

MS Walk this Sunday

I will be walking at the April 22 Legoland MS Walk event in Carlsbad, CA.

I hope you can get out in 2012 and help make the biggest fund-raising efforts of the national MS society a big hit. I am showing a picture of a past MS walk, in Irvine, CA, in which we raised several thousand dollars on behalf of MS research.

Heading into Warmer Weather

Setting travel plans to Midwest, I am reminded quite firmly that we (in the Northern hemisphere) are heading into warmer weather. I am planning a trip to see relatives in Ohio and Indiana and I really need to plan around cooler weather whenever possible. Sadly, my window for cooler-weather travel is closing fast. Reason: heat can bring out lurking MS symptoms in the form of pseudoexacerbations. This is a fancy way of saying  MS symptoms appear or worsen due to heat exposure.

People with MS, like myself, have plaques on our nerves where demyelination has taken place. This slows the ability of the nerves to function, and heat further slows down nerve impulse transmission in demylinated regions. Even a very slight increase of as little as one-quarter to one-half a degree in the body’s core temperature is enough to cause symptoms of heat intolerance (which I have written about before).

Sometimes, with heat intolerance, symptoms of MS appear that we might not have felt before, which is the result of a lesion in a corresponding area of the brain or spinal cord that was slight enough that it did not cause a relapse or symptoms dramatic enough to notice. Some, for example, get Uhthoff’s sign  (blurred vision as a result of heat exposure). This is caused by a lesion on the optic nerve, known as optic neuritis. Many people that experience Uhthoff’s sign never had classic symptoms of optic neuritis and may be unaware that they ever had it until the appearance of Uhthoff’s sign due to heat intolerance, pseudoexacerbations.

For some people, heat intolerance and the pseudoexacerbations that come (including the mildest: tingling in the feet to the harder-core: crushing fatigue or severe weakness) can be debilitating enough that they are unable to function well at even slightly elevated temperatures and must consider moving to a cooler geographic location. Deaths have even been reported among people with MS who were sunbathing or relaxing in hot tubs and presumably lost the cognitive and likely physical ability to get out of the heat.

Stay cool if you can, but travel is my goal. I will take a cadre of coolers, misters, fans, breathable shoes with me when I go to the heartland, but I will, by Lord, travel!

Beat the Heat Tips from Sea World San Diego

I am thrilled to report that Sea World San Diego has recognized that high heat at its seaside park can, in fact, impact visitors. Take a look at the following caveat posted on its website:

Temperatures can get quite high — especially in the middle of the day. Plan to take in these “cool places” when the thermometer rises: Wild Arctic, Penguin Encounter, Turtle Reef, Shark Encounteror any one of three Aquariums.

I applaud Sea World San Diego for making mention of heat-beating attractions that can help those with heat sensitivity.

Proof: we can beat the heat … and travel.

Ensenada, Mexico: Trip This Weekend

Ensenada, one of Mexico’s most successful cities, has grown from a sleepy fishing village to become a popular beach resort. This oft-visited Baja destination is described in Carnival Cruises’ online literature as a “multi-faceted jewel.”

Among its most popular locations are the waterfront promenade, the higher-end shops of Avenida Primera, and the winery of Bodega Santo Tomas, founded by the Dominicans in 1888.

There are stables nearby for tourist excursions through the arid land next to the Sea of Cortez, La Bufadora, a natural sea geyser located nearby, puts on a more dramatic show. Be wary of the vendors selling stuff to you along your path to the sea. It becomes wearisome, to be honest.

Heat sensitive travelers beware: travel in the morning whenever possible. There’s not a lot of air conditioned respites, nor shade, and cold drinks are hard to come by at times. I plan to bring a white hat, a bandanna I can soak in cold water and wrap around my neck to stay cool and a pair of the Coolest Shoes in California (which keep your feet 10 degrees cooler than conventional shoes).

New Desert Travel “Must Have”

Evershade Cools RVs Up to 30 degrees!

Evershade Cools RVs Up to 30 degrees!

There’s a brand new product available for the heat sensitive traveler: Evershade RV roof systems. This Las Vegas-based camping innovation can be seen in action at its You Tube video seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI8gwwhe0Xs

This new product is designed to enhance the RV experience and travel by heat sensitive travelers by effectively cooling the whole RV.

The makers have data that proves use of the product delivers a 75.4 percent reduction in heat reaching an RV roof which keeps the interior itself up to 30 degrees cooler on a hot day!

Manufactured in 16 different colors, the ventilated product is deployed across the entire roof of large or small RVs using a simple remote control. The product is guaranteed color-fast for 10 years and the actual expected longevity is 15-20 years.

Manufacturer Bruce Langson (also known as Mr. Evershade) says the benefits of the product also include quieter RV interior, not having to listen to the two extra air conditioners which would otherwise be required to cool the interior as effectively as the deployed roof shade with one air conditioning unit. He says the lowered interior temperatures save internal cabinets and protect the electrical components,. Other benefits: covered the roof mounted components have less exposure to the UV and harsh heat of the sun, giving them years of additional life.

Mr Evershade told me:”I hope Evershade promotes some fresh thoughts on the benefits of portable shade for the very expensive RV’s that are currently being enjoyed by over 8.3 million families.”

Well, it will certainly make a difference in enjoyment of RVing by heat sensitive travelers like me!

Winter Beach Trip

A Look at the Ocean Palms Beach Resort in Carlsbad, CA

Ocean Palms Beach Resort in Carlsbad, CA

A seaside escape is great for heat sensitive travelers because the proximity to the water keeps temperatures nice and cool. Stayed here last night and was quite pleased at the ambient air temperature.

I flung open the half-door on top, opened up all the windows in the mini-suite, and really enjoyed the night air.

A dip in the Jacuzzi was easy to say yes to because the night air was so cool, and the evening air was expected to drop my core temperature back down. (It worked like a charm.)

Heat Sensitive travelers should consider taking advantage of beach vacations for their cooler temperatures and may find they can benefit from “off season” vacation rates while they are at it.

Grab your partner and enjoy a cool seaside stroll in Carlsbad, CA.
